Push forward with UBC: Igniting a biotech boom

BC’s biotech boom is all around us, and our research is the pulse. At UBC, we are transforming discoveries into breakthroughs that push us forward for a stronger, healthier world.

UBC discoveries are transforming vaccines and treatments—our research laid the foundation for the lipid nanoparticle drug-delivery platform for mRNA, which made the COVID-19 vaccines possible. Our researchers are advancing treatments for some of the biggest healthcare challenges we face, such as cancer and Alzheimer’s, and using tools such as genomics and AI to better understand, diagnose and fight disease.

UBC discoveries have led to the creation of more than 300 spin-off companies, including the globally recognized AbCellera and Aspect Biosystems—and our researchers and students have been at the heart of companies such as STEMCELL Technologies, Canada’s largest biotech company.

See how we push forward, every day.

“UBC’s economic impact is all around us—and it happens through our people. UBC researchers laid the groundwork for BC’s biotech boom that continues to grow today. From students and faculty to staff and alumni, the ideas that emerge here power jobs, companies and communities across BC. It’s not an exaggeration to say that UBC is one of the province’s most powerful economic engines.”
